As a proud sponsor of the 2023 World Copper Conference in Santiago, Chile, the International Copper Association (ICA) will be hosting a ‘Focus on Substitution’ panel discussion on Tuesday 18 April 2023 from 2:30p.m. – 3:30p.m. (CLT).

Moderated by Reuters Mining and Future Energy Correspondent, Ernest Scheyder, attendees will witness an informative and engaging session, which will consider the work of ICA’s Market Outreach Division, led by Director of Market Intelligence, Colin Bennett. The panel will focus on substitution, covering current and future market trends.

Copper substitution stood at 1.25 percent of global copper usage in 2022—a relatively modest amount compared to the metal’s total consumption. Substitution, driven by advancing technologies and improved models of efficiency, can contribute positively in the drive toward a more sustainable future.

The panel will address the reasons behind the gradual increase and forecasted stabilization of copper substitution, placing emphasis on how this relates to changing minimization trends. Copper substitution will remain central to industry discussion due to an expected doubling of demand for the metal by 2050. Conversation will cover regional impacts, sector drivers, trends and industry outlook.

This session will be structured as a Q&A, with DMM Managing Partner, Krisztina Kalman-Schueler; CRU Principal Consultant, Francisco Acuña; and ICA Asia Regional Director, Richard Xu, answering questions about the long-term availability of copper and the future of the industry.

Colin Bennett, Director of Market Intelligence at ICA, commented on the event: “The World Copper Conference is the key event for the copper industry, so the opportunity to host a panel event educating stakeholders on a topic as important as substitution is welcomed. Copper’s role in the green energy transition and the associated interest regarding its long-term availability has been front-of-mind for many in the industry. Attendees will be granted unparalleled access to ICA market intelligence and expert analysis during the event.”
