ECI and Leonardo Energy present the EPBD Debate Series “Road to Zero-Emission Buildings”. Watch the recording of the first event in the series.
The greenest energy is energy that is not used. The energy efficiency first principle states that whenever solutions on the demand-side (e.g., energy efficiency improvements), deliver higher economic net benefits than the generation, transport, and consumption of energy, these measures should be implemented first. Applying this principle holistically will reduce energy demand and bring down the total cost of energy transition.
This first debate explored how we can minimise losses in buildings as we exponentially electrify the economy and maximise the reuse of waste energy. Efficiency improvements of the building envelope, such as insulation and glazing, are well known, but what about technical building systems? Are there still opportunities to gain energy savings and improve system efficiency? How do we ensure these solutions are taken up within the legislative framework?
